We're going to need a bigger boat..

Last week, we took our wee boat (aptly christened “The Ugly Duckling”) out for its first spin of the summer out around Amity Culdaff Bay.

It was a glorious day with a glass-like sea, however it turned out something unusual was lurking close to the surface…

Alas, it wasn’t Jaws, but it was a group of basking sharks!

There wasn’t just one of these huge creatures either (each bigger than a family car), there turned out to be at least a dozen of them swimming close to the surface, doing whatever basking sharks do – basking perhaps!

If that wasn’t special enough, we had another surprise visitor later that day. Lolling around the surface in almost the same spot as earlier, was a huge Sunfish. These oddly shaped friendly giants sometimes appear in these waters, swimming on their sides, taking in as many rays as they can on a good day.

And to top it all off, Joyce caught a big pollack for the dinner!

One Comments so far.

  1. I don’t know if I would have remained as calm as you while seeing those sharks – I didn’t realize they were that far up north – I read this week about all the dolphins up there – congrats on the fish! I bet it was yummy!
